Description

Who doesn't know Walter Gropius' famous Bauhaus buildings in Dessau? Their unique architectural appearance is also characterised by a garden design that was unusually innovative for its time, the modernity of which is reflected above all in the novel interpretation of the interplay of architecture and nature. In this volume, the author Dorothea Fischer-Leonhardt deals fundamentally with the Bauhaus gardens for the first time. The thorough garden archaeological investigation of all gardens of the Dessau Bauhaus buildings built between 1925 and 1930 not only permits valuable insights into design planning and realisation, but also reveals the sometimes considerable interventions in the building fabric through numerous renovation measures. The book is thus a useful and necessary supplement to the numerous publications on the changing history of the Bauhaus and its architecture.

This first fundamental examination of the gardens of the Bauhaus by Walter Gropius and Carl Fieger not only provides valuable insights into design planning and implementation, but also brings to light the sometimes considerable interventions through numerous renovation measures. - GLAS 5/2009
